you find your dog or cat has some tiny pieces of 'black muck, or dust' on the skin.
You then comb or shake it onto a white piece of paper, and on damping the paper it looks like that below.

This is "flea dirt"- the name for the 'droppings' or faeces, of fleas. Becase fleas drink blood, thier droppings include lots of pigment, and so when the droppings are put on wet white paper, the paper becomes 'blood red' in those areas.
So this is a simple test you or your vet can do to know if your pet has fleas. Because although you may not be able to find and catch the fleas themselves (if they are jumping off and trying to hide), you should be able to find the droppings ! :)
