Exclamation introducing a new dog into the house

My 8-year old Cocker Spaniel is as soft as a brush at home. However when he is out walking he shows aggressive tendencies towards other dogs, especially those bigger than himself!

I will shortly be bringing home a Labrador pup (female) to replace the wonderful Labrador the Cocker grew up with and with which there was never a cross word.

I wonder if anyone has any tips to help if the Cocker does not take to the new arrival.

Hi kenfrith,

I would suggest you buy some DAP dog pheremone spray or a DAP diffuser to put in your house, the calming smell is meant to help keep dogs relaxed.

Try to introduce the dogs to each other bit by bit over a week. Start in a neutral environment eg the park, or garden, not the living room.
Slowly get them more used to each other. Reward your older dog with treats when he is nice to the new arrival.

Dont allow the new dog to be around when you feed the older dog for the first few days- otherwise the older one could get snappy and defensive over his food?

good luck!

It may be possible to introduce the dogs in a relaxed manner by just letting them sniff and play - as long as both are known to be friendly with other dogs.
